A Report of the Kingdom of Congo: And of the Surrounding Countries ; Drawn Out of the Writings and Discourses of the Portuguese, Duarte Lopez; by Filippe Pigafetta... Rome, 7 August 1591

Extremely rare engraving from the first Roman edition of 1591. Before the smaller woodcuts included by De Bry in the first volume of his Small Voyages in German (1597) and Latin (1598) who are based on these engravings and who are far more common.

Duarte Lopes was a Portuguese New-Christian merchant sent by the Catholic king of the Kongo, Dom Álvaro I, as his ambassador to the Pope in about 1578. After a long and tumultuous journey that took him a decade, Lopes arrived in Rome and had a fruitless audience with Pope Sixtus V. In Rome, he also met the Italian humanist Filippo Pigafetta (1533?-1603), to whom he narrated in detail the history of the kingdom of the Kongo and the Portuguese presence there. Based on that meeting, Pigafetta wrote an illustrated book in Italian entitled Relatione del reame di Congo, first published in Rome in 1591. In the years to come, Pigafetta’s Relatione became a European best-seller, with countless translations and editions,

The Catholic Kingdom of Congo (anno 1591)
Belgium has a narrow colonial connection with the African country of Congo. Still it is amazing to learn about the early discovery's by the Portugal and Spain.

The image shows three females of Congo. The prints are madearound 1591  in Italy and based on the observations of Lopes Duarte. It is clear this is no photographic report. The artist did not know how a women of Congo looks like and he placed the women in an Italian landscape typical for the 16th century's period (like in the work ofTitian and others)
