Christoffel Jegher (1596-1652)

Christoffel Jegher (1596 - 1652)

Wood-engraver, born at Antwerp. Probably a pupil of Christoffel van Sichem.
Settled 1627 in Antwerp .He became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1628.
He collaborated with Rubens on woodcuts (he named his youngest son Pieter Paul after him). His son later assisted him with his prints.

According to the RKD he was also the father of the engraver Jan Christoffel. H

aving realized the potential profits to be made from reproductive prints of his work, Rubens began to engage printmakers from 1619 onward. In the early 1630s, he turned to woodcuts in close collaboration with Christoffel Jegher. Indeed, Jegher's place in art history as the most important woodcutter of his time rests exclusively on the nine large single-page woodcuts that resulted from this collaboration.
