Dirk Volkertsz Coornhert (1522 - 1590)

Engraver, poet and freethinker. Born in Amsterdam; began printmaking in Haarlem in 1547 and collaborated with Heemskerk until 1559. In 1560s became town clerk, but fled to Cologne in 1568. Remained in exile in Germany until 1576 when he returned to Haarlem, bringing with him Goltzius as a pupil. Died at Gouda.

Coornhert was filosopher, humanist and politicus. He was a friend of Prins Willem van Oranje (1533-1584) and they had their  aversion for religieous persecution the in common.

The style of the engravings he did after the early work of Heemskerck is still strongly influenced by the Italian Renaissance, both in technique and design.
