A complete series of twelve plates after Gerard van Groeningen by Van Doetecum

 Reference: New Hollstein 187 (Gerard van Groeningen) New Hollstein 634.I ( III / III) (Johannes and Lucas van Doetecum)
This is a third state, The series was first published by Gerard de Jode; then by Claes Jansz Visscher; and finally by Jan Schabaelje.
Jan Schabaelje was a Dutch publisher/printer who was active in Amsterdam between 1643-1649. This series was published at that time.

Description as found in the BM are:

1.Deucalion and Pyrrha; landscape with the couple throwing stones which turn into children in lower left corner, the couple again in front of the temple of Themis at centre, the couple in a stream around the temple at right, animals lying dead in lower right corner, classical ruins in background;

2.Venus and Adonis; landscape with Adonis lying dead in Venus's lap, Cupid holding his hand, a large spear lying on the floor behind him, three dogs at right, classical ruins in background;

5.Pyramus and Thisbe; landscape with Pyramus lying dead next to a fountain in foreground, Thisbe standing next to him and ready to stab herself with a dagger, a tomb and a lion under an arch at left, a city in background

7. Daedalus and Icarus; seascape with Daedalus burying Icarus in lower left corner, his wings lying next to him, a temple on a small island at centre, Daedalus flying and Icarus seen falling from the sky in top right corner;

10.Erysichton and Ceres; an emaciated man crawling in foreground, Ceres on a chariot drawn by dragons at top centre, ruins of classical buildings at left and at centre, a city in background at right; Narcissus; landscape with Narcissus looking at his reflection in the water in lower right corner, a garden with a fountain in background

Gerard Groenningen ( 1550 - 1599; active)

Flemish printmaker and print designer, active in Antwerp. In earlier literature, the P in his monogram was interpreted as Paludanus, but this is based on no documentary evidence
