Paulus Bril (1554-1626)
Paulus Bril (1554-1626)
Flemish School Painter of landscapes, engraver and miniaturist.
Born in Antwerp but active in Rome most of his life together with his brother Mattheus who died at a young age of 24. Paulus gained even more respect then his brother and was a close friend of Carraci who even painted the personages in some of his paintings.
Paulus Bril made "school" in Rome and trough his pupil Tassi he was the indirect master of Claude Lorrain. Bril worked for all the popes of the time. The greatest merit of Bril is that he was one of the first artists really involved in the painting of mainly landscapes. He added some Italian sweetness to the strong Flemish landscape style.
He was seduced by the Ialian light and in this way he prepared the landscapes of Claude Lorrain
