Pieter de Jode I (publisher/printer; printmaker; painter/draughtsman; Flemish; Male; 1573 - 1634)
Engraver, painter, art dealer and print publisher. Born in Antwerp, 1573. Son of Gerard de Jode ; brother of Cornelis . Pupil of Hendrick Goltzius. Married to Susanna Verhulst, niece of Pieter Coecke van Aelst and sister-in-law of Jan Brueghel I. Lived in Italy, namely Venice and Siena, in the 1590s; Probably back in Antwerp by 1599, when he matriculated into the Guild of St Luke; Dean of the Guild, 1608; Travelled to Paris, 1631-32. Father and master of Pieter de Jode II.
