Sisto Badalocchio (1585-1620)
Painter and engraver: Italian, b.Parma 1585, d. after 1619. He was trained in Parma by Agostino Carracci. Accompanied Annibale Carracci and his assistant, Lanfranco, to Rome in 1606 where they assisted Annibale in a number of projects, including the completion of the wall frescoes of the Galleria in the Palazzo Farnese, and the decoration of the Herrera Chapel, S. Maria di Monserrato. They remained with Annibale until his death. In 1607, Badalocchio collaborated with Lanfranco in a publication of a series of etchings after the frescoes of Raphael's 'Logge' in the Vatican, which they dedicated to their master Annibale. Also Badalocchio painted 4 mythological scenes after the cartoons of Francesco Albani at the Palazzo Verospi. In 1609, after the death of Carracci, he returned to Bologna where he produced more frescoes illustrating the life of Hercules at the Palazzo Bentivoglio. He came under the influence of Ludovico Carracci (1555-1619, the cousin of Agostino and Annibale) and Bartolomeo Schedoni (1578-1615). Later executed a number of paintings in churches. Badalocchio's principal surviving work following his return to Emilia is the fresco decoration of the cupola and pendentives of S. Giovanni Evangelista, Reggio Emilia (1613) which took inspiration from the work of Correggio. In 1614 he was once more in Rome, where he again worked closely with Lanfranco. He returned to Parma in 1617 and spent the rest of his career there. In his late period Badalocchio specialised in small easel pictures, often of nocturnal scenes, such as the 'Entombment'.

He is noted more for his work as an etcher than as a painter. His plates imitate the style of Guido Reni.
